MENTAL HEALTH, AN HIGHLIGHT

Why is mental health still something we are afraid to talk about?

Mental illness is considered to be one of the major causes of disabilities in the world today. The number one mental health disability worldwide is depression as well as disabilities like suicide etc… In the society, mental illness stigmatizes more than any other illness today due to lack of understanding, uncertainties and fear.

We all have mental health and it is just as important as physical health. Did you know that we have mental health disorders such as; depression and anxiety and on the other hand we have positive mental health such as; fulfilment, content and thriving. The importance of mental health ranges from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. However, it is important to note tips as to how individuals can look after their mental health which includes; talking about their feelings, healthy eating, engaging in positive activities, taking care of yourself and others, etc.

The aim of mental health is to help with the prevention and treatment of mental disorders and help with the improvement and achievement of a positive mental health, and also empower other individuals mentally. Mental health doesn’t focus on just our emotional and psychological health but also on our social and physical health, because it affects how we think, feel, and act.

Ever heard of the emotional affects not just the psychological but the social, physical and even the spiritual.

To be mentally healthy, you have to be resilient, be confident, be in control of your thoughts, words, and actions, and be able to manage and express your emotions.

We all experience mental health, I felt really sad yesterday and its okay to be sad sometimes because everyone experiences mental health in one way or the other whether you are sad, scared, stressed, or anxious but if these emotions become persistent, it is advisable to seek help from friends or professionally.

It is important to note that mental health does not mean mental illness. Mental health exists on a continuum, at one end of the continuum we have mental illness and at the other end we have mental wellness.

We should all learn to recognize mental health and support each other.
